Jun-Ki Chung is a scholar specialising in historical theology and East Asian religious history. He received his B.A. and M.A. in American Cultural History from Northeastern Illinois University (USA). He subsequently pursued his doctoral and post-doctoral studies at the University of Chicago, where he specialised in East Asian Religious History under the supervision of Distinguished Professor Martin E. Marty. He also earned a Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) in Missiology from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (USA).

Professor Chung served as Full Professor of Historical Theology at Kwangshin University, South Korea (1997–2014). During his tenure, he held several key administrative positions, including Dean of the Graduate School (2010–2013) and Vice President (2013–2014). He is currently Head Researcher at the Institute for Pietatis Theologia at Kwangshin University and serves as an Editorial Board Member of Phaos Journal of Theology (since 2025).

He has made substantial scholarly contributions through a wide range of publications in both Korean and English, having produced over 100 academic works in the two languages (see links below). In particular, he has authored numerous influential books in Korean on Christian spirituality, church history, and theological thought. His works address topics such as the spirituality of the Desert Fathers, autobiographical spirituality, the history of Christian student and evangelical movements, Puritan figures, missional cultural criticism, and the Great Awakenings in American religious history. He has also published comprehensive volumes on early, medieval, modern, and contemporary church history, as well as regional church histories and devotional writings. These publications have significantly contributed to theological education and the study of historical theology in South Korea.

His English publications include Social Criticism of Uchimura Kanzo and Kim Kyo-Shin (1988) and Legacy of Missionary Sarah Barry (co-authored, 2025). His academic work is widely indexed, including in Google Scholar and Scopus.

Professor Chung has actively contributed to graduate education by supervising research and has served as a dissertation examiner and chair for approximately 30 doctoral theses. His research interests include historical theology, Christian spirituality, mission theology, and East–West religious interactions.

He has received numerous academic honors, including fellowships from the University of Chicago Humanity Division, the Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Chicago, the Korea Foundation from South Korea, and the Government of South Korea. He has also engaged in international academic exchange, including research and language study at the Goethe Institute in Germany.
